Bishop Lobinga

Born: 22 January 1929 in Passau, Germany. Ordained priest: 29 June 1955 in Regensburg, Germany.
He arrived in SA in December 1956 as Donum fidei priest from Regensburg Diocese, Germany together with his friend Fr. Oswald Hirmer. He worked in Aliwal North Diocese and later on in Lumko Catechetical Institute, Lady Frere from October 1969 until October 1986 when he was appointed administrator of Aliwal North Diocese. In 1987 he was appointed Bishop of Aliwal North and ordained Bishop on 27 February 1988.
When Bishop Brook resigned in 1995, Bishop Lobinger took over the Diocese of Mthatha as Administrator. Administrator from 26 January 1995 until 28 June 1997. He took over the Diocese in a time when there were important issues to be solved. The circumcision problem in Up Country Parishes was going on for almost 20 years. He took his work seriously and spent every second week in the Diocese. That meant doing a lot of travelling and being absent from his own Diocese Aliwal North.
As Administrator he was not allowed to make any innovation in the Diocese. But Bishop Lobinger being a pastorally minded priest introduced a procedure of Sanatio in Radice in marriage cases, which is a process of making marriages of active married woman in the Church but whose husbands are not interested in Church valid. He introduced the Blessing of Service Leaders. He got involved in the reconciliation in the Up-Country Parishes. He also responded to political demands and the discussions going on within and outside the Church concerning the possession of vast lands by the Churches. He initiated negotiations with the Government to give part of the Mariazel farm to a Trust which guaranteed, especially the families who were living for generations on the Church land to continue to live there and own the land. This process has not yet been completed.
He ordained 2 priests in Mthatha: Fr. Mdinwa and Fr. Falatsa.
He handed over the running of the Diocese to his friend Bishop Oswald Hirmer on 28 June 1997.
