All Saints Cathedral
The All Saints Parish was established in 1882 while it was together with the Joly Cross Convent for many decades the centre of Catholic Activity for Central and Southern Transkei. In 1930 the status of the Church was enhanced when its parish priest became prefect apostolic, and with the promotions in 1937 to episcopal dignity of Vicar Apostolic Emmanuel Hanisch, Mthatha became the centre of a Vicariate, and the still small church became Pro-Cathedral.
Between 1942 and 1944 a new Sanctuary and Sacristy, a longer nave and two Towers were added to the existing church which was later embellished by artful furniture in the Sanctuary. The enlarged and improved Cathedral was solemnly consecrated; the procession with the Fatima Statue in December 1948 by Archbishop Martin Lucas. In 1955 a wall was built along the Craister Street section, thus giving the church a presbytery a proper boundary between the road and the buildings.
A great for the Cathedral was a blessing and installation of three bells (which Bishop Grueter had received as a donation from his home village Ruswil and which he had blessed when they were made in the foundry) on the 12 of August 1956. A Pretoria firm emplaced a pipe Organ in the Choir loft ; the Parishioners helped generously in this development. For the benefit of the Norwood Community the Church Built a multi-purpose in 1965/66, the All Saints Recreation Hall, since 1972 also known as the Bishop Karlen Hall. Apart from serving the Church and the Community, the Hall also served St. Josep’s Primary School and the Youth Club which had a Considerable Membership in those years.
After collecting enough funds during his home leave in in 1978, Fr Marcel approached Mr Eric Addison in January 1979, the latter contracting to build the Church at Hillcrest. The foundation stone was laid on the 18th of March 1979 and the Church was blessed by the New Bishop on the 8th of July 1979.
In 1995 with the establishment of a new Suburb next to the University called Southridge developed. A New Outstation Ascension was built, with the Corner stone blessed in 1995, and blessed in 1996. Until 1999 the Outstation (Ascension) was financially and pastorally administered by All Saints Parish as an Outstation until the year 2000.
